10 Tips for UK Genealogy Research on Internet

  1. Getting Started Ask family members what they know or recall of your family history. Keep notes and records of all information (names ~ places ~ dates) Look at all old pictures, post cards and letters for clues - even postmarks. Once you have your information compiled, begin your search for ancestors and family members leaving Norway to the United Kingdom.

    a) Leaving Norway ~ Digitalarkivet - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no
    b) Arriving in UK no records were kept
    c) Indirect route via Denmark and Copenhagen see 10 Tips Danmark

  2. Census From 1841 to 1901 with 100 years closure (1911 is being prepared for early release), start to look in the U.K. Census. 1881 is a freebie both on Family Search
www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp and TGN http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/census/uk/default.aspx (pay for images). Ancestry.co.uk and Genealogy.com are paid subscription or pay per view or "ask a friend" eg http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.census.uk/mb.ashx , and RootsWeb has a tremendous amount of free sites that can get you on your way- new url http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ . Do record from the census the information listed in the columns. (Maritial Status, occupations, place of birth as listed, children etc). All of this information will further your search.

  3. Civil Registration began 1 July 1837 but about 25% of births are unregistered before 1875. You will be able to search with as little or as much information you have gathered see http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ and http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx . Read this introduction to UK genealogy Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History by ROY STOCKDILL http://www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html . Learn to make good use of http://www.genuki.org.uk/index.html as a whole.

  4. The online genealogical communities Started with usenet http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Newsgroup_Gateways/GENBRIT.html is a gateway by email for England, Wales and Scotland. and http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/IRL/GENIRE.html is gatewayed with the soc.genealogy.ireland newsgroup for the discussion of genealogy in Ireland (both north and south). See also http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?sel=33589646 Check if the persons you are looking for already have been mentioned in old messages at Usenet News genealogy discussion groups by a search at www.disnorge.no/slektsforum/index.php?c=121
Newcomers to news:soc.genealogy.britain / GENBRIT-L and news:soc.genealogy.ireland / GENIRE-L newsgroups/mailing lists, and to the various regional mailing lists (and people who've mislaid their bookmarks!) frequently post queries that could be easily answered by reference to the World Wide Web-based UK & Ireland Genealogical Information Service (GENUKI http://www.genuki.org.uk/index.html). Rootsweb mailing Lists Find a List Search, Index (Browse All Lists) UK county lists are very active, ROOTS-L Mailing List, Surname List Finder, Archives Search, Threaded Archives

  5. Rootsweb message Boards Message Boards Home Page, Surnames | Localities | Topics

  6. Parish Registers or Church Books You should be able to continue tracing your ancestors before 1837 but these do not contain as much detail as the Lutheran ones. One place to start looking for Marriage, Birth and Death Records is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Website has extractions of vital records online www.familysearch.org

  7. Land and Property Records Land registration started very late in UK and estate and old property records may be found at county or national archives.

  8. Evidence and Proof = Documentation Always obtain copies of original documents or records. With this evidence, you are showing proof of your lineage. Examples of this are: Birth and death certificates, marriage certificates or licenses, deeds and other land records and probate records and wills.

  9. Search Around There are tons of free genealogy websites, be adventurous and search around. Google is an excellent search engine you can begin with www.google.com

  10. Participation Join and participate in Family History Societies Genealogy Organizations. Exchange information, share resources and offer ideas. Remember, others are looking for the same thing as you see GENUKI: Family History and Genealogy Societies the The Federation of Family History Societies, or the Scottish Association of Family History Societies, or .... family! www.disnorge.no
