Getting Started Ask family members what they know or recall of your family history. Keep notes and records of all information (names ~ places ~ dates) Look at all old pictures, post cards and letters for clues - even postmarks. Do record from the census the information listed in the columns. (Maritial Status, occupations, place of birth as listed, children etc). All of this information will further your search.

Civil Registration began 1 July 1837 but about 25% of births are unregistered before 1875. Parish Registers or Church Books You should be able to continue tracing your ancestors before 1837 but these do not contain as much detail as the Lutheran ones. One place to start looking for Marriage, Birth and Death Records is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Website has extractions of vital records online www.familysearch.org
Land and Property Records Land registration started very late in UK and estate and old property records may be found at county or national archives.

Evidence and Proof = Documentation Always obtain copies of original documents or records. With this evidence, you are showing proof of your lineage. Examples of this are: Birth and death certificates, marriage certificates or licenses, deeds and other land records and probate records and wills.

Participation Join and participate in Family History Societies Genealogy Organizations. Exchange information, share resources and offer ideas.
